Development and Climate Days 2018 (D&C Days)
Date: 8-9 December 2018
This year’s D&C days will aim to influence the ‘Ambition Mechanism’ processes under the UNFCCC – particularly the Talanoa Dialogue and Global Stocktake – and to inform climate action on all levels, looking ahead to 2020.
At D&C Days we share learning experiences by engaging, being productive and having fun. The dynamic format encourages dialogue on a range of issues that link policy, knowledge and practice. Innovative approaches encourage participants to interact, challenge existing thinking and to generate new ideas.
The 16th annual D&C Days will continue to build on the topic of “Global ambition. Local action. Climate resilience for all”, and will focus on four themes:
- Resilience through empowerment: exploring the effective pathways to empowering the most vulnerable when responding to the emerging opportunities and risks of our world and its rapidly changing climate.
- Valuing lived experience and local knowledge: highlighting the opportunities that local and traditional knowledge give us to inform local, regional and national policy discussions related to climate and development.
- Transparency and downward accountability: examining the ways in which decisions are made, climate responses are prioritised and climate finance is directed to ensure it delivers the intended benefits to vulnerable populations and supports a more robust global stocktake for adaptation.
- Financing adaptation and managing risk: championing solutions that remove barriers to prevent climate finance reaching those more vulnerable to climate change, while integrating risk management approaches to help improve resilience.
Within these themes, D&C Days will be tackling big questions, seeking effective and practical answers, and working together on fair solutions. Through creative activities and interactive discussion, we will consider a series of complex questions, including:
– What steps can local, business, and civil society take to boost action in developing and developed countries?
– How can we build resilience in the face of increasing fragility and vulnerability to conflict in a way that promotes stability and peace?
– Science based engagement – how can we get the data out there?
– What novel approaches are needed to address climate risks and vulnerability in today’s rapidly urbanising places?
Alongside our programme of sessions D&C Days will also host the “Tea with 1.5 degrees” video installation and an art exhibit by Karolina Sobecka on Post Production Food.
This year’s event is organised by a partnership between the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre, International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), Environmental Finance Center West (EFCWest), the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the German Development Institute/Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE), Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR), Global Resilience Partnership (GRP) the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).
Contributing partners to this year’s event are The Adaptation Network and Zurich Flood Resilience Alliance.
