Coastal Climate Change and Adaptation – a Sea-level Rise Risk Assessment for Cape Town

Project Details
Organisation(s) involved: City of Cape Town, LaQuar, UEMP (Urban environmental management programme) and Econologic
Project Objective/ Description: This project assessed sea- level rise risk for the City of Cape Town by identifying and prioritising risk reduction options including institutional, biological, physical and infrastructure options. Both direct and indirect risks were considered, focusing on the storm damage and what happens as a result of storm damage. The last phase identified particularly vulnerable locations and distinguished between different aspects of sea- level rise including wave run up, wave set up and eustatic sea- level rise.  The findings supported the implementation of a coastal buffer zone in the City of Cape Town that is currently being planned.
