Adaptation responses – A southern Cape case study
Project Details | |

Organisation(s) involved: | Environmental Monitoring Group |
Project Objective/ Description: | The Eden District is suffering its worst drought since recording began some 100 years ago. Municipalities have been forced to institute drastic water-saving measures – from restrictions, increased tariffs, punative fines, etc; to drilling new boreholes and building expensive desalination plants.
The municipalities’ responses are currently being documented along with information on their effectiveness and cost. Also we will look at how the pressure to reduce consumption has impacted on municipal revenues, and how they have balanced the shortage with the demand for free-basic water and services to poorer communities. |
