Adaptation & Imagination Part 2: Bring Your Hands to the Work of Climate Adaptation

If we think deeply about what is important with climate adaptation, we recognise that collaboration is essential. Collaboration, community and a collective spirit are ideas and practices that we will need to embrace more fully as we adapt to inevitable shifts in our environment and the world around us.                              

This co-created artwork vividly illustrates the power of hands – a symbol of action and unity.

The phrase ‘all hands on deck’ resonates here, reminding us that every individual contributes to our collective efforts. Hands represent the actions we take and the potential of joint action. The metaphor of hands talks about unity and the concept of a collective: there is strength and diversity within any community. If we look at the artwork, some hands are stronger and bolder, while others more hesitant and uncertain, while some might need some extra support to find their full potential. Each hand in the artwork symbolises not just action but also the rich diversity of perspectives that can lead to innovative solutions. Each individual brings their own unique strengths and abilities and the strengths of one individual can complement the hesitations of another, creating a dynamic where learning and growth occur. In climate adaptation, recognizing and valuing this diversity is crucial.  When we bring ourselves to the collective – to the community – we need to bring the best and most authentic parts of ourselves. Our full selves. Our whole selves. By sharing this, we create a powerful collective that can tackle any complex challenge.

As described in the Intro Post,  this artwork was co-created by participants at the Adaptation Network Colloquium visual art workshop. Everyone brought their hands into this  artwork. It features vibrant colours and detailed beauty in the smaller pieces placed within. It shows how both detail and broad visioning of individuals and the collective create a full and rich picture. 
Climate change, social justice and the adaptation that is required for us to exist in new conditions are all complex challenges, and require new strategies. We need to be working in ways that shed the old, fixed way of working and find ways that draw on the skills, experiences, and understanding of each individual in a specific context. To truly harness the  power of collaboration, we must challenge the traditional top-down approaches that have dominated climate policy and adaptation strategies. Instead, we should embrace a model where decision-making is decentralised, allowing communities to take the lead in making decisions about their specific needs. These new ways of thinking and working allows for all individuals – no matter their age, gender or education – to contribute. By fostering an environment where every individual feels empowered to bring their full self to the table, we can create a sense of agency, so that people can build resilience.

The challenges we face are complex and multifaceted. By embracing collaboration, valuing diverse perspectives, and nurturing a spirit of inclusivity, we can develop robust strategies that not only address immediate needs but also build long-term resilience. When we unite our strengths and vulnerabilities, we empower communities to adapt, thrive, and inspire future generations in the face of the climate crisis.
