Empatheatre, an approach for climate adaptation research & storytelling?
How might such a methodology contribute towards deepening empathy and building public discourse around climate adaptation?

Adaptation requires innovation and creativity. Life itself is inherently creative – always moving and adapting to thrive and survive in changing circumstances.
As climate change reshapes our landscapes, South Africans confront an uncertain future marked by increasing frequency of extreme weather events—floods, droughts, and unpredictable storms—that threaten not only livelihoods but also food security.
If we think deeply about what is important with climate adaptation, we recognise that collaboration is essential. Collaboration, community and a collective spirit are ideas and practices that we will need to embrace more fully as we adapt to inevitable shifts in our environment and the world around us.
At the Adaptation Network Colloquium held in July 2024, attendees came together for a visual arts session centred on collaboration, creative expression and climate adaptation. This session encouraged everyone to step outside their comfort zones, engage with new people, and explore how creative processes can help address the complex challenges of climate change.
This animated presentation explores what climate-resilient development pathways involve through visual metaphors. It emerged from a session at the Adaptation Network Colloquium (July 2024), where researchers and practitioners were sharing their experiences of working with pathways to enhance development and reduce climate risks in the Eastern Cape and Western Cape.
From 14 to 16 July 2024, the Protea Fire and Ice Hotel in Cape Town became a vibrant hub of activity. Researchers, policymakers, community-based organisations, and the private sector gathered to exchange ideas, showcase their work, and engage in meaningful discussions about climate adaptation. The Colloquium provided a platform for sharing knowledge, exploring new solutions, and building collaborations to advance the adaptation agenda across southern Africa.
Climate change is one of the most pressing challenges of our time. Addressing it effectively would require significant financial resources.
Climate justice frames climate change in terms of what is considered socially and politically fair and equitable.
