Location: University of Venda, Vhembe Biosphere Reserve

Organisers: Vhembe Biosphere Reserve Youth Network & University of Venda

Participants: Local youth from the Vhembe Biosphere Reserve, with support from Indigo Development and Change

Activities:
The Climate Action Youth Workshop aimed to empower young people in the Vhembe Biosphere Reserve to take action on climate change. The event featured presentations on climate resilience, adaptation, and indigenous knowledge. Mr Farai Dondofema from SAF-Adapt introduced the youth to climate change adaptation opportunities, while Dr Lutendo Mugwedi shared insights on indigenous strategies for coping with climate impacts. After these talks, the youth were divided into groups to discuss and conceptualise climate change mitigation and adaptation, with feedback sessions allowing participants to share their ideas and thoughts.

Outcomes:
The workshop successfully engaged youth in meaningful discussions about climate change and adaptation strategies. Participants left with a deeper understanding of the local context and the importance of traditional knowledge in tackling climate challenges. The event also inspired the youth to act as climate change ambassadors within their communities, particularly in schools, helping to spread awareness and foster a sense of collective responsibility. Overall, the workshop contributed to building local capacity for climate action in the Vhembe Biosphere Reserve.
